Diegetic Sound       DYE-uh-JET-ik

What

  • Film terminology
  • Sound which is natural to the action of the film
  • Sound that you would expect the characters to reasonably hear in the film
  • Dialogue, music or noise created by a character and ambient (environmental) sounds of the setting: waves crashing, wind blowing, train whistle, traffic noise.
  • Also called "location sound" or "sync sound"
  • Compare with non-diegetic sound.

When

  • Most of what you hear in a film is diegetic sound. Non-diegetic sounds are those that are added afterwards, in the editing room.

NB: Some diegetic sounds are enhanced later. For instance, two people are at the beach. You can hear the surf rolling in. in order to get better sound, the "surf" sound may have been taped separately and added later.
